You can find just about anything you want in life. If you want to be happy, there’s plenty to celebrate. If you want to be sad, there’s plenty of tragedy. If you want to find obstacles, there are plenty. If you want to find a path to success, it’s there. If you want to find injustices, they abound. If you want to find beauty, it’s out there. If you want a reason to complain, you’ll find one.
Everyone has been blessed and been wronged. Everyone faces hardship and receives support from others. Everyone can find people who’ve had an easier road or a harder road. Everyone can find someone who is more talented or less talented. Everyone can find someone who’s had better luck or worse luck.
In short, life is what you make of it. Your circumstances are what they are. If you wish to change them, you probably can. But your contentment in life will almost always come down to your perspective, to how you respond to your circumstances. If you want to find happiness, it’s there to be found. You simply have to choose it.
But too many are more comfortable when they are sad or depressed, so they keep revisiting that hurt they experienced years ago, ripping open the wound if necessary. Others feel better about their own shortcomings when they’re outraged, so they seek it out, creating it if necessary. Others remain bitter about the hand they’ve been dealt, and they’re determined to spread it around.
So the question for the rest of your life is who you will choose to be. If you wish to be happy, you will find plenty of reasons to be. If you wish to be sad, bitter, or outraged, life will provide that path as well. Who will you be? It’s a question that we must answer every day for the rest of our lives. And it will determine whether we die content or with regret. Choose wisely.
